Orford is a small village on the East Suffolk coast. The Norman castle dates back to 1166 although only the keep remains. The castle has a commanding view of the village and of the more distant River Alde (known as the River Ore at Orford) whose estuary it was built to guard. However, the passing centuries have moved the mouth of the river some five miles further south.
