E-books are electronic files of a particular format that can be downloaded and accessed using a range of e-reader devices such as the Kindle, and platforms such as the Apple iPad or even a home computer. Unfortunately e-book publishers currently all have their own particular formats and layout rules regarding illustrations etc.
The open-source ePub format, which is similar to HTML, is the most widely used standard. Every e-book publisher can convert word-processor formats, such as that of Microsoft Word, in to the ePub format. Some publishers also provide a downloadable ePub format file so that authors can check their book using Adobe Digital Editions.
